Holidays to Celebrate in Europe

In Europe, there are numerous ways to celebrate the holidays. With so many diverse cultures, you are sure to experience some of the many traditions celebrated.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

In Spain, celebrations begin on December 8th with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This feast celebrates the belief of the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. In this celebration, they break bread and give thanks.

Fira de Santa Llucia

In Barcelona, you can find one of Spain’s oldest Christmas fairs, Fira de Santa Llucia. The festival dates back to 1786 and features about 300 stalls, merchant areas where vendors offer any product you could possibly imagine, such as pottery, art, and jewelry. One of the most popular attractions at the festival is the gigantic piñata Christmas log filled with gifts and sweets.

St. Lucia Day

Moving over to Sweden, on December 13th, you can experience the celebration of St. Lucia Day. This celebration has been a long-standing tradition since the 4th century. It is based on the story of a young Christian girl who was murdered because of her religious beliefs. The Swedish people hold a parade in her honor, led by a young girl dressed in white and adorned with a crown of candles. While there, you can also explore the snow-covered mountains and take time to enjoy some extracurricular activities such as dog-sledding, snowmobiling, or skiing. With some luck, you might even catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

European Christmas Markets

Throughout Europe, you will find Christmas Markets, where vendors showcase a wide variety of wares like nativity figurines, candles, and Christmas decorations. In Belgium, a country known for its long-standing neoclassical architecture, one can enjoy browsing more than 200 stalls at the Winter Wonders market. While there, feel free to enjoy some beer and waffles and enjoy the lights of the city while riding the Ferris wheel.

Another popular market, Gendarmenmarkt, is found in Berlin, Germany. At this market, you will find one-of-a-kind art, sculptures, and various other unique gift ideas. You may also enjoy the seasonal sounds at one of the many Christmas concerts. Wherever the market may be, each one has something different to offer—whether it’s food, the decorations, or the people, they all share the same spirit of the holiday season.

Overall, the most consistent features you are likely to find throughout Europe are the beautiful landscapes, the breathtaking architecture, and kind people.
